Is there a meaning attributed to the different colors?
Yes , the attached picture shows a basic set of koi nobori.
top one is a talisman to protect from evil. Black one is father and Red one is mother.
then all other colors like blue, green, orange, purple, pink, yellow are children.

So nobody but Tonio and I and Dick (doh!) actually own koi nobori? Anybody else? It seems there are more Tanuki out there than carp windsocks....

House of Rice has a fair selection. I lucked into mine with a Japanese antiques and collectibles dealer, a one of a kind thingie. I found some others online that were just gorgeous, but waaaaay out of my pocketbook range. Beautiful though....

ahh, the myth and meaning of the koinobori go back even deeper that boy's day in Japanese culture ( as opposed to Chinese culture). It's a very interesting lineage and unique to the history of the Japan. And it also adds meaning to the symbolism of nishikigoi as a colored carp of strength, masculainity and perseverance. JR
