Judging Kohak.

These 2 Kohaks are in Size 3 and are competeing in Best in Variety in this size class.

With the criteria being said you have to judge which fish is "Best in Variety"

You notes should be based on:

A.Conformation
B.Best Shiroji
C.Best Beni
D.Best pattern that fits the flow of the fish(pattern will always be preference)

I will keep it simple for now and will increase the amount of fish to judge with each new thread. Words of wisdom that Keokoi has always told me is to judge with your heart.

Just a note: I know these arent the best pics but it is an exercise, so we will treat it as one.

Hmmmm, Back to school for you Tony. First of all, you can't have 2 of the same variety and the same size competing for best in Variety. One would have already been chosen over the other in the best in variety within a given size...perhaps what you meant?

A.Conformation
The Kohaku on the right

B.Best Shiroji
Can't tell from pictures but based on what is presented, the Kohaku on the right

C.Best Beni
Can't tell from pictures

D.Best pattern that fits the flow of the fish(pattern will always be preference)
Both have positives and negatives, flip a coin (based on personal preferences)

Overall? The koi Kohaku on the right based on the pictures. Standard disclaimer applies: You cannot adequately judge koi from pictures, only pictures of koi from pictures.

Best Beni appears to be the one on the left. It also has a better tail joint. But, the shiro is better on the right one. Pattern-not great on either. Originally I thought the first one but the shiro on the second is so good I move for #2

I assume when you say "best beni" you also include the kiwa and sashi. So, based on the all the criteria for this judging exercise, I would choose the second kohaku in all four categories. Maybe conformation is equal- different camera angles- hard to tell.

Best beni would include sashi and kiwa, but like said the pics arent really the best...

Agreed. This picture doesn't clear. I can see the kohaku #35 has some hi in left pectoral fin.

Conformation- The look about even from the pictures, but angles could be deceiving

Best Shiroji- I like the shiro type on #35 better it's not as hard of a white, but it is the type I prefer on Kohaku as it shows of the orange red beni better

Best Beni- #335 looks to have more even beni, and a more orange red as opposed to the straight red of #33

Best pattern that fits the flow of the fish- Both fish have pattern flaws especially when showing in size 3, but #35 looks to have a better balance.

Both got good structure. Maybe the angle of the shot made the tail tube in 33 look better. I choose 35 because in terms of pattern it looks a lot more balance. I like how the hi on the head is balanced by the tail end and the middle hi has good shiroji on the front and back. Very pleasing pattern.
