What can I use for koi to spawn?

I have a concrete polyurea lined pond. I would like ideas on something I can place in the pond for the females to attach their eggs and see if a male will fertilize them. It must be temporary so I can pull them out and place them in a aquarium to see them hatch. Any ideas?

If you don't want to shell out $$$ for commercial spawning brushes, you can always go the DIY route. Here's a pic of the DIY spawning mop I made last year...

Show tanks work well. There is usually 2-3 spawning at every one of our shows.

When the koi are ready, put a long string mop head in and do a big waterchange/or better yet put the koi in a seperate tank with fresh water and the mop head.....

I tried using mopheads last year, as well as my DIY spawning mop. My DIY spawning mop worked well, but the Koi didn't seem interested in using the mopheads whatsoever. It was pretty obvious, at least in my case, that my Koi preferred the commercial spawning brushes over everything I tried. They began spawning very soon after adding the brushes to the pond. I know the owner of a local Koi farm uses branches from a tree for his spawnings. I'm not sure what type of tree, but similar to pine. In any event, they were free and worked great for him...

Branches of the Australian Pine or Ironwood tree have small soft needles. Also, the branches sink (hence ironwood) and do not have to be weighted down. Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce work very well with their long soft roots. I take several lenghts of polyethylene rope and untwist the strands then wrap a piece of lead around one end.

We use "Spawntex" made from coconut fiber. Alternatively the "One size fits all" air filters from wally world work good, but they must be thoroughly washed prior to use to remvoe the "glue" on them. we ahng them along the sides of the spawing nets. The rough surface serves a stimulant to the female and the open meshed weave allows eggs to go in the mat where the fish can;t get at them to eat them.

I've also used the old favorite of fish hatcheries for hundreds of years....Spanish Moss. Lots and lots of that around here. It can be put in loose or attached to a frame. Heck a limb from a moss covered tree works just fine. So do limbs from Bald Cypress trees.

If the koi wish to spawn, you ain;t gonna stop 'em, and they'll attach thier eggs to the smooth sides of the tank if need be.
