The Hoshikin Kohaku

I would like to know more about the Hoshikin koi farm breeding goals and practices. I have read Kodama's articles but would like to hear from those who have been at this for some time and visit these farms are a regular basis. Some questions, where do their strengths lie, shiroji.. beni, body conformation, ect...., how do they raise their tosai/nisai, due they raise their koi using the old methods or new methods for rapid growth, number of pairs, as much as you can share will be welcomed?

Here is an example of a female nisai kohaku born in June 06', 20 inches collected by Kevin Pham last fall 07' from Hoshikin tategoi pond.

All I can say is that I acquired a tosai Kohaku from Hoshikin two years ago in a club group purchase and have been very pleased... the best koi I've acquired as tosai that wasn't staying in the breeder's mud pond. And, as MikeP notes, no shimmies. (I've gotten shimmies with Torazo and Maruyama Kohaku.)

Hi Bob, I would love to help you out but am still very new to the hobby myself. What I can share with you though is that I also have two female Hoshikin nisai kohakus in my collection right now and am very pleased with them. In fact, I bought one of them from Kevin this past fall. Awesome body conformation and already a whopping 21" at nisai! The other nisai I bought from a local dealer last spring (Ake Nisai?). A little bit smaller at around 16" and, while conformation may not be as nice, she is developing nicely. Will hopefully post pixs soon.

From my readings and in talking to other kichis, I learned that they use Tomoin bloodline in their parent stock and their kohakus have a tendency to not develop shimis. Other than that, that's pretty much all I know, and I am sure you already know these :-)! Am very interested in learning more about this breeder myself.

Kohaks I had in the same water:

Sakai Hiroshima - No shimis
Yagenji - No shimis
Matsunoke - Shimis
Momotaro - Shimis
Hirasawa - Shimis
Marudo - No Shimis
Ogata - No Shimis

I dont really adjust my water to one particular breeder's fish. There are some I stay away from and there are others I know that will not develop shimis...Survival of the Fittest.

Hi Stan, I don't know how many Hoshikin kohakus Kevin had for sale last fall, but I did end up with one of them. I don't know if it's the same one that Bob used to own though. I downloaded the pix of the koi from Kevin's website.....hope he doesn't mind.

I'm surprised to see you list Yagenji as "no shimis". Do you remember that a certain dealer in our area has basically nothing but Yagenji Kohaku and every one I've seen there develops shimis. That includes the ones I had purchased in the past. I guess it really is affected by varying sets of water quality parameters. I have had better success with Maruyama fish now that I have added the water softener. My Hoshikin and Matsunosuke Magoi line are also doing well, so far!

Hi Michael

Your Hoshikin is looking very good! She has grown a bit since I saw her last. I don't have any pics of mine at this point, but she grew a little and her beni lightened up some. It's stretching in the shoulders so the beni is nice and elastic to grow with her.I like the evenness of her beni throughout the body. Keep up the good work. Maybe she'll be ready for Gardena in 2010.
