Greetings,
I was just curious about the development of bacteria in the pond outside as well as wondering if I should intervene on the algae.
I finished construction of the new pond in the fall, and the weather had already cooled off so there wasnt any bacteria ever developed in the filters outside. So I left all my fish in the old pond outside until we moved them in.
About december we moved the fish inside to an 800 gal. QT for the winter. Inside I'm using a TT and a pressurized filter so I wont really be able to transfer the mature media into my DIY filters outside.
The pond outside is like green soup right now. No fish. But the algae is so thick you can't see more than 6" down. (not guessing either, I stuck my arm in to see how much visibility I would have.) I guess without any bacteria or plants to compete with, the algae is just thriving!
I'm wondering the best way to get things started outside when the water warms up. Also, what temperature am I looking for before starting any efforts. It's currently 47 in the water. The days are getting warmer but the water temp is rising very slowly.
The pump was never shut off all winter, and the media is in the filters right now.
So anyway...
water changes to deal with algae?
algaecide seeing as there's no fish in there?
Bacteria start up product for filters?
Canary fish?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks a bunch.
