yeah we always used to just do flock spawns but never had any GC let alone much great to look at.. ive been slowly selling out the ones i dont want to keep.
i really need to get some photos taken down here but its raining away now.

with your fish there, you say probably different parents from different farms, do you maybe know if the persimmon colour and the red colour is true to those farms or do you get a random thing going with colour of red from the same farm anyway?

i have fish like your persimmon. but my other red is really red like blood but does not seem to come out in big scale patches like the other kohaku colour.

i really will need to show pics to explain it. ill be back as soon as i can get some pics cause i want to get to the bottom of this red stuff.

The first picture really shows the stark difference in the beni types you are working with. The Menkaburi has the almost Purple Red beni, while the pair at the top of the photo are more Persimmon. It looks like you have some decent pairings to experiment with.

Do you have any larger pictures of the fry? It is tough to make out much about their skin in the small photo.

yes and thanks for that, that is the differences i wanted to show so im glad i found that picture/
i never heard that name for the dark red though. its the one that doesnt seem to scollop nicely but just ends in small blotchey edging.
ive only got those with red on the head and not in nice patterns down the body, i have a feeling that may come from my bodgey sanke line even.
thats pretty much the same fish i wouldve paired up this past season too. next time i may separate them to see where all my orange junk comes from. i guess thats a sure fire way to know my stock better.

ill get some more pictures tommorow, of some small ones.
my camera card isnt being read from my computer because it says it needs formatting.
ill grab the usb camera cable from work and will come back with some more pics of fish. also im going to put a trap in my brood pond to try catch some gin rin kohaku plus today i saw a nice example of a 20cm kohaku that actually impresses me for colour.
i picked it out six months ago as being a hopeful and threw it in my brood pond and its looking rather promising to be a future breeder.
im beggining to be hopeful that i can get good fish happening one day here.

I've been patiently tapping my foot in hopes that Brett or Brady would chime in here... They actually do this stuff for a living (unlike me who plays around in the back yard). Until they do (hint, hint...) take a read at this thread if you haven't already. I'm finding far more value looking at skin quality than at colors early on, and this thread is quite helpful.
What is meant by good skin quality?

i did see that thread in its early incarnation but thanks for pointing me to the rest of it. it makes sense to me. what gets confusing is that the patterns can come and go and finish off at different times.
now i have an idea of the koi we want to take pictures of too its just hard to find them.
i was looking for ages to find a shusui of the kind dick was saying and everytime i would find one with red pecs it had the orange riding up high or on the tail, or if it was nice it had clear pec fins.
what concerns me still is that today i saw one i put aside and it is about 30cm long now and the scalation down the back are not desirable at all. i can now imagine how hard it is to find good ones and them have them woth good scales later on let alone think about body shape too.
