The new pics to me, makes it look even more like hikkui, if my eyes are working properly, there are more areas in the beni that appear to be hikkui infected.

Is it on both sides of the fish? Also have you tried touching the effected areas?

Could be carp pox, but it is more likely Lymphocystis. If you have a scope, snip the corner off one of the warts and see if the cells are huge and deformed. It is unmistakable.

I doubt if it is Hikui. Here is my 5 year old Dainichi Showa with exactly the same bubbles on it shead. I punctured the bubbles and a clear liquid came out. I looked at the liquid under the microscope but even on 1000 magnification I could not see anything move. I put some wound medication on and after a week the marks disappeared. My koi is also in full sun and I was wondering if it was not a sunburn blister.

Mine only has the solid looking lump. No blister.

FWIW, I have a Wakin covered with lumps. I've sent pics to several "people in the know, including docs" and they're all said it was Lymphocystis or Fibrocarsinoma(?). The thing that really bothers me is this looks a lot like the lumps on the Wakin when they first started. All these people said that what the Wakin has is specific to goldfish.

I'm going to try to bowl my Showa tomorrow and see what I find.

Almost looks like two different types of problems. While I do agree that the newer photos show some symptoms of what we've come to know as Hikkui, these gaseous "bubbles" shown now on two different fish IS NOT HIKKUI! Koibooi, you mention that you treated the infected areas in the head of the showa and it has cleaned up with no side effects, right? I truly hope when you did this, you had put the fish down to make sure none of this fluid entered into a bowl of water to "possibly" cause whatever it is to contaminate and possibly infect other areas of the fish while being treated. Just food for thought for anyone else who has fish that have these symptoms. Until we know more about what we're dealing with, don't try to just "break the bubbles" or "scrape off the lesion" allowing this fluid to enter the bowl, or worse yet, your pond. You could end up with one helluva mess. Just MHO

Because your pond is quite shallow the temperature could have gone very cold and it is a good possibility it is carp pox ,Which goes away by itself and is quite common in colder water fish . The other problem is that your fish went up to the warmest water at the surface and got sun burnt as the temperature increased .. I would never treat anything I did not know what it was . Hope that is all it is .

koibooi -- the bubles are exactly the same as the ones on your fish. I am not sure if it is sun blister. My pond is 6 feet deep and mostly in shade. I really don't hink Sun is a big issue here.

btw: How big is that Showa your are holding in the picture? Compared to your hands in the pic, the fish is gigantic!!

If I remember, carp pox was a waxy cream colored lump or lumps that looked like melted white candle wax drippings that felt like silicone. Not a blister filled with liquid to pop if pierced. The larger field of irritation looks like hikui. The blisters I have never seen before. Remember you are suppose to leave blisters intact to speed healing and to avoid infection. At least that is what my Mother always said to do.
