There was discussion a few months ago on another board about wasp stings possibly causing a koi death. No conclusion was reached, but it would certainly be best to avoid wasps in the water. Interesting observation on the fish not eating the wasp.

I do not believe there is any pesticide suitable for your purpose. I hope the heron statue is movable (not cemented in place). If so, your best bet is to relocate it at night to a spot where you can use an insectide the next day. If the statue is of the type I am imagining, the opening on the bottom is more like a wide crack on the underside. This makes it difficult to use water, vinegar or other non-poisonous 'remedies' that make the nest site less comfortable. Query: Is the heron in full sun? If so, the metal may become too hot for their liking when summer arrives and they may move on.

That's a pretty good idea. I've trash bagged a few bird houses that were infested with 'em and gassed 'em inside before. Worked pretty good.

Back to the herons. I've been to San Antonio and found it a pretty sociable place. Why the herons there would be anti-social I really don't know, but once they cross the Red River and head our way they seem to flock just fine when there's something to snack on...

Our Koi don't eat them either Mike. Most any other bug that hits the water is gone in a gulp, but Red Wasps never get touched, even if waterlogged and unable to escape. Koi are pretty smart eaters. I've plucked out the bodies of legless Tarantula's. The fish ate the legs right off of 'em and left the torso intact. They seem to know where the poison is.

Perhaps longfins aren't as intelligent as koi, but Puppydragon (my kase kumonryu longfin) struck a wasp and came away with a fat lip that lasted more than a month. He kinda looked like Al Jolson all made up for The JazzSinger...
