I have two friends of mine with high end koi that have used the product for several years
and like it. They get theirs thru Nisei Koi Farm. I used a small portion for a coupla weeks and the koi ate it and liked it but didn't use it long enough to give it a fair trial. My sakai
Showa at Olson's in spokane has been raised on a mixture of all their products now for three years. I hope to get it home this spring.

Interesting. Is it a supplement to regular feed? Or a stand-alone feed?

That’s a beautiful showa!!!
I am planning to add it as a variety until I my work slows down and I have time to chop up the fresh fruits and veggies. Not sure of how much to feed per week percentage wise. Any ideas?? My thought is supplementing 20% of this into their diet.
Just have not seen this product mentioned on any sites before.

I do not see a nutrient analysis. So, check the label and think in terms of the type analysis you think optimal for conditions and goals.

BTW, I like mixing in a little of something different. I think the koi enjoy a little surprise.

I have tried it several times and was not particularily impressed. I try new foods out in my smaller indoor holding tanks where I have underwater cameras and windows so I can very easily the waste generated from each food I try out. Especially through the camera. You sure can see floating "stuff" easily through the lens. I found if feed too much the whites went down and the waste in the water went up. So if you're going to feed, I would feed only as a suppliment. Maybe a few handfulls 3-4 times a week depending on your filtration system. Watch the cheeks of the fish (whites). If you see yellowing there, cut back or cut it out all together until the white returns.

Koi Food

What foods do you recommend, then, Sue! I know that your Shiro Utsuri is a great barometer because it seems to "show you" that it prefers certain foods. I use Dianichi premium and the immuno-stimulant and fruits and veg. from Microbe Lift. MONEY IS AN OBJECT!

sincerest Kudos to Microbe-lift...their sales department packages their products in a very good and current way...
they have done their research as to what their consumers WANT to have in their foods
They were the first i know of to add koi-clay to their food...

They are quick to bring a product out as well.... products they identfy are hot topics in the koi hobby.

I don't know about their quality, or the nutritional advantage of the food the thread is concerned with, but fresh fruits and veggies are cheaper and probably more "complete" than the cooked and squeezed pellets.

i add "fruits and greens" by recognizing what there is on my plate that the koi might benefit from, and giving them a nosh..if that isn't wrong why doesn't everyone?

Amen

You know that a mixture of foods is a good thing. I am no expert, but I do a blend of foods all the time. It's really neat because I watch the way the food is eaten. the most desirable foods seem to go 1st. I keep my Koi inside all winter (Minnesota) so I can also observe them. Dianichi and Microbe-lift formulas go right away. The last to go is the UNNAMED cheaper foods! They know what's good! My question to Sue is: What do you like, since you have a lot of experience with all kinds of foods?

I've really been searching for a few foods this winter that I can keep as a staple and one that I can add as a suppliment. I like and have offered Hi Silk with sweet potato for a few years now and really like it. Protein levels are not high, but it still offers the Silk powder in the formula. Not much waste either even though the pellets are large. This winter I've tried OSI, Microlift, and blackwater max and gold. Most recently the Blackwater. I've only been feeding it for a little over a month so what may happen with the whites, I'm still not sure. So far so good. What I did notice is that there is little waste in the holding tanks. The ingrediant list is acceptible. If this food doesn't pull the whites down I think I'll stick with it over the summer to see if I can get some good growth and body. The Hi Silk will remain a good portion of what I offer. I may add back the Microlift fruits and veggies as a suppliment once the fish are back outside and the filtration is better along with bigger water. There are so many good feeds out there. I think we each need to find one that fits into our budgets and gives us the health we are looking for as well. For me a good indication of good heatlh is how good the whites look and decent growth....not fast growth, but growth that doesn't stretch the colors or push the natural progression of the fish. To me slower is better.
