Thanks Mike.

I'm stepping off the cliff again. This koi is growing VERY well. I measured it today at around 18". I plan on getting a tub complete with inch marks so that it is visible in the pictures.

The "one off" koi now has a significant hump on the shoulders, similar to many of the larger fish I have seen on this site. Color is staying pretty consistent. I am guessing female because I have NEVER seen a male put on this much girth and size so quickly. Tail tube is very thick. I've had comments that it won't reach 20 inches since it's a mutt. But I think it's out to prove people wrong. Pectoral fins seem small, but that may just be because of the girth. Check out the pictures. I know it's a mutt, but I think it's doing a good job at looking interesting!

The last one is a comparison of last fall to now. See what I mean about "girth"?

Ethan

Is anyone here surprised to see such quick growth? I estimate that in the last 2 months it has grown at least 2, maybe 3 inches and gained maybe a pound. Not a showstopper by any means, but still an interesting mutt that is friendly, loves to be fed, and looks "interesting".

new pics, including some from the side. There is starting to be a little red on the cheeks, as well as some at the base of the pectoral fins and around the caudal fin. Probably some asagi blood in this well growing mutt.

Any thoughts, positive or negative?

Well, can't deny it's growing well... However, bio load being used up on that is like putting premium in a Pinto....

Sorry Ethan, but that thing is just getting uglier.

You've recently acquired some nice fish. Do them a favour and give this one up.

TBH..... brutally honest, every time I see this thread bumped back up by you, I secretly hope you're announcing you've given it a new home....

Grant

I know you love this fish, but DAYUM those scales are a wreck
I said a long time ago they reminded me of blue shoe-peg corn, and it seems to be getting worse. If the lateral line ever goes ragged I'm callin' it a snaggle-toothed hillbilly Koi I'm sure it is interesting to watch, and I know it is probably going to be the longest living Koi in your pond when you are rockin' your grandchildren on your knee, but pretty is never going to be in this things future...

Clearly beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have got to give Ethan credit for being able to bulk up his koi. Even the showa the he purchased recently has put on very impressive growth. To each his/her own, and if this koi was my own, I would agree w/ Grant that I have learned what I can from this koi and pass it on to another owner.........just my opinion.

Is this Koi from a pond spawning of yours ? I'll guess yes and this is why your hanging onto it .

The Asagi genes are showing more and more... including the darkening head, unfortunately. The growth is good and the powerful figure is holding well. A curious fish.

Troy, never caught your question...

no, it isn't from a pondspawning of mine....a purchase back in 2006 from a fishstore that got a mixed shipment of koi...it looked neat, and it was before I had ever really gotten into knowing what a good koi was.

I wonder if a breeder could do anything with it and get a similar pattern of the scales to be consistent?

I have a couple large butterfly koi that I'd rather unload than this one, just because of its crazy growth, and the interesting scales.

by the way, she has almost caught up to my 5 year old butterfly sanke in body size (obviously without fins).
