Do you see the fins as still too small? I thought it was interesting to get a side view of the fins from the aquarium.....I think the sheer girth of the body hides a good measure of the fins....

Ethan , I know you want this koi to be something special , but sorry my friend , ITS NOT !

The Koi lacks balance (Head , Body , Fins) . It doesn't matter even if the body was hiding the Pec. Fins (Which its not) , it doesn't have the pieces to be much more then a Pond Fish .

You ask in another post about a breeder wanting to use it (something like that) , well your on the right board to find out . Any PM's Yet ?

Sorry Buddy , Its just not much of a Koi .

More of the "Curious" fish...

I am definitely thinking asagi lineage the more it grows. It has grown a LOT lately...eats like a hog. As much space as it is taking up, it's worth it to me to grow it out as big as I can get it. I'd rather free myself of my longfins before this one. The red is coming out in the pectoral fins....wonder if I had softer water, if it would come out more...???

I have to agree that it's not and never will be a pretty fish. BUT, most everyone has an ugly fish that has sentimental meaning to them and they keep it just because. If you like this fish, then by all means keep it until you tire of it or it passes on.

Just because it's a mutt doesn't mean it won't grow. I have the ugliest Kohaku you'll ever want to see, spawned in my pond naturally and she was 28" in May. She grows 3-5" a year. She's not particularly friendly but I keep her because she's huge both in length and girth. She also teaches the others how to push the rod on the auto feeder.

I also have a 30" longfin that is speckled. I keep her because she's 19 years old and my first fish.

I've moved up the ladder a few rungs in the hobby and have some nice fish. Keeping the fugly ones for sentimental reasons just means you either build more or large ponds or you have to sacrifice a better grade fish. When it's time for you to move on, you'll know it.

the tank shots are interesting as it is always fun to see a new perspective. it looks in the one pix to have GR all the way down onto its belly.
.... but that koi does look much better in blue! and I hope it looks swimming in your pond more like it does in the blue bowl than it does in that tank.

at this point it seems to have out girthed it's length.
shame it has such a dirty face which seems to be getting worse. if the face was clean then it's color/pattern may be appealing, maybe.

Here's some pics I got for you of the side and belly. It does look like at least reflective scales.....
