some pics of that different looking koi

I posted pictures of this fish before here with varying responses. I figured since I was able to get some decent pictures yesterday, I'd post and share. I think the head is clearing up. The head was pretty yellow last year, and with my water quality having improved, as well as a nice long winter, it seems to have cleared up. Hoping to get it to 20" by this fall.

Thoughts?

Oh yes, the mutt with a difference. She looks good as to health and vigor. She is lucky to have you own her. ...The asagi-style patterning on the back shows well in these shots and the white scales within it are interesting. You are doing well with her.

Thanks Mike. I know it won't win any awards, but it's lineage tends to stump a lot of koi people. I know its a mutt, but an interesting one compared to some I have.....

Yeah, the white scales are indeed different. The camera or sun really gives a flash off of them. I don't think they are any type of ginrin, do you?

LOL... What is it? She is unique. In earlier times in the hobby, when the search for new 'varieties' was the rage, Dr. Kuroki would create descriptive names for unique koi. She has some attributes of Gin Matsuba, but not quite that. She seems to have a primitive metallic character, some Asagi and a scale alignment issue. Have some fun and create your own unique name in Japanese that is descriptive of her. But, please, don't play the Ebay scheme of applying a fancy name and telling everyone she is extraordinarily valuable. Her value is in the pleasure she gives.

BTW, in 1948 she would have been the center of much attention.

No, I won't be playing that ebay game. I am tired of seeing 15 step kohaku and kage showa that are just showa that are falling apart. It is a neat fish, and I am just hoping to get some good growth from it and for it to hold its pattern. Most of my fish are just pondgrade, which is fine becuase I really at this point in my life don't have the type of money many of you do to spend on fish. My two year old daughter takes my money and runs with it!

Either way, right now I want to learn about water quality and picking good young fish out and watching what they do in my water.

Thanks, I appreciate all the comments.

EThan

Ethan, we can be a 'tough board' when it comes to evaluating koi, but there are few 'high-end' koikeepers who do not still have a beloved koi whose value is not measured in dollars. The best way to learn how to keep koi is to stay within your budget for money you can lose. Nothing to apologize about. We've all been there. And, I was not joking when I said she would have been the center of attention 60 years ago. She is not a show fish by any means, but she is worthy of being appreciated for what she is and for what she represents... an accomplishment of over two centuries of selective breeding. When the time comes that you are ready to move to another level in this crazy hobby, I hope you retain the ability to cherish the fish that infected you with the koi addiction.

...BTW, my little girl is now 22. Want to trade?
