Is this a safe transfer..quarantine to main pond???

I have had 5-6koi in my indoor quarantine for the winter. The temperature right now is 57deg in my basement pool. My outdoor pond is now 52deg. Is this a safe transfer temperature...or is it better to wait? Thanks for the advice.

Funny, I just did this. Three beautiful fish (Tosai) I picked up from the San Diego Koi Show. Had them in a tank with a heater (65F ) Had to move after a week because needed the tank for hospital. Move them to my new 5 Diameter tank (61F) swam around actively. I found them the next morning .. .floating. I checked everything. Narrowed down to temperature difference.

Long story short - Wait

Here a link that explains more.

Did you transfer these fish IMMEDIATELY from 65 to 61 degree water or did you acclimate them for a while (15-30 minutes) before releasing them? That doesn't really sound like the problem unless you did this in the afternoon and the temps dropped dramatically overnight. Then I could understand it.

The temperature change was the culprit.

4 degree shift from 65F to 61F causing death? I have to agree with koiczar. If that 61F was stable, I'd be looking for a different cause. Heck shows tanks swing way more than that at outdoor shows at some venues.

Pond Water Temperature

Sorry to hear that Matt-those were very nice choices from the show.
If the ph or nitrites were a big difference that could have contributed.

Its always good to aclimitize before puting in pond/by adding pond water to the QT
a bit at a time for about a week before tranfer.....
Or better yet QT with pond water the whole time.

Your buddy,
Rookie

The temps over night were low. The water temps. most likely went into the 57-59 F range. My tank is exposed to the elements (I live in "sunny warm So Cal" ha ha). It was a newbie mistake and I thought I had gotten by that tag (guess not). So for me it's:
1. No new fish in 08 (I'll "try" to grow out the ones I presently have)
2. Donate the less desirables to the local koi auction
3. Do my best to limit my buying when the AKCA Seminar joins forces with the San Diego Koi Show (Feb. 09). I just know the fish dealers will be bringing extra special fish and deals (RookieKoiGuy, be forewarned)

I think you need to look for a cause other than the temperature differential. Perhaps the temperature change was too much for small, recently imported tosai, but the result would be infections from the compromised immune system, not overnight deaths of every one of them. It sounds more like what happens if you forget to dechlorinate.
