Are you suggesting now that he is doing God's work by moving into yamabuki longfins? Unless he is going to breed them with unicorn horns, I don't see this an 'Innovative'? I suppose if one door does not open you can try another, mate! But is it just me or am I sensing some thing here?
I'll give you this, if Sakai becomes known for producing the very best yamabuki butterfly on the planet ( a variety by the way with an 80% keeper or sellable rate) then he won't enhance his title of 'Innovator'. And if he is just making more longfins to compete with Suda and all those 'several other breeders' that are also making longfins ,then he is in danger of loosing Innovator status in favor of imitator status. Either way, this is a change in our image of Matsunosuke.

my 2 cents, JR

The only thing worse than having longfin in a pond is having goldfish...

Here's one for you JR.....

Here is an auction on EBay:

"LARGE Live Japanese Koi. NO SHIPPING---LOCAL PICK UP ONLY!!! I've had this koi for nearly four years and is extremely healthy! Sure to not disappoint, guarenteed! I need to downsize my fish population, and this big fish needs more room!

12-13" Butterfly (Long-tail) All Black Karasu! I call this one "The Black Dragon". Super rare fish, espically one this size! Go try and find one and if you do let me know what it's selling for...I saw an 8" fish like this one sell for $425 on ebay last spring and that didn't include the $90 s/h.

I live in SW Washington in the Portland/Vancouver Metro area. This is a great time to buy mature fish like these, for he/she may spawn soon!
No skinny, diseased, pond shop koi here..."

I think the seller would get more hits if he would have put Matsunosuke anywhere in the auction listing... But I do love the sales pitch...corny but enjoyable.

My point was that if a brand could add on another product and still maintain the quality of the product that made them famous then why not? Yes there may a few Kichi that hate the very thought of it, but if it is profitable for the breeder than why not, koi a few hundred years ago was just an ugly carp. Selective breeding by great breeders brought about what we enjoy today, in my mind it would be easy to see why one might want to be a pioneer in bringing about the development of a new breed.

So T, what do you think that Longfin is worth? I'm NOT trying to be mean or elitist, but it is a karasugoi with longfins. I happen to like solid colored longfins OVER the ones that try and be gosanke in drag. So I would favor this fish highly in a longfin division within a koi show. Having said that, black koi are easy to produce if you use two hypermelanistic parents of solid pattern. Doubt you can sell babies for more than $ 20? I've seen them in the local pet store chain ( all black) for $14.99. Add the longfins and a summer's growing costs in a decent backyard facility and I'd say this longfin should fetch $30-$35. Get's hard to justify the shipping costs as an amortized cost as it will be more than the fish is worth?
This begs the question, who was the poor fool who paid $425 + 90 = $515 for a 12 inch karasu longfin??? I have a bridge I would like to sell him/her !
So I'd start the bidding at $20 if I was trying to win it. If he usese the magic words 'Matsunosuke bred', I'll bid up another $3. If there is a story saying they live to be 150 years old and a free will update is included with the purchase, I'll add another $2

JR, I would have to say the fact that the user put "Large" as 13-14" it would be valued at $3, now if he had put "Matsunsoke" Magoi line and had put personally "Bred by Sakai Isawa" or "Hand selected by Toshio Sakai" I would add a dollar more. Then point and laugh when it arrived and throw it in Akinosan's pond. HAHAHAHAHAHA. or Maybe just re-EBay it as Sakai Hiroshima and see how much more it will sell.....

well it's called the Brooklyn bridge and it is located in New Jersey-- Belmar New Jersey. It was built in 1510 and the Indians used it to move tobacco and corn to New York to sell to the Pilgrams. Some say it was built with gold stolen by the Spanish from the Inca. It was then painted gray to protect the gold from scratching and from tobacco smoke. years later, diamonds were enbedded in the cables of the structure to help reflect moon light down onto the bridge's surface for night travelers. Recently the bridge was down for repair as there seems to be crude oil pooling at one end of the bridge due to a natural oil field located on the bridge property. We have plugged it and most of that vast oil field is now staying just below the surface and no problem to the operation of the bridge or the toll payers who have to cross it every day to get from New Jersey to New york. The drivers simply slow down and throw twenty dollar bills into large baskets placed along side the bridge. On a sad note we recently buried the old troll that lived under the bridge. On a bright note, this now allows billy goats to cross the bridge unmolested and they also will pay $20 to cross, which of course, increases traffic and revenue.

I was going to list the bridge on Ebay but you can have her for $ 9000. Please let me know as I have several smart investors looking at it right now. He who snoozes--- looses
