Hi Tony, just to make sure that I understand you right, you are saying that the 5.5 head length concept does NOT apply to nisai and older koi. Is this correct?

Yes, in general look at most or all the pics of "Japanese" Koi Show fish, if you look at the ratio factor you can see 4-4.5 ratio clearer. The 5.5 ratio is a bit too long for me, maybe it is correct for some, but for me 4-4.5 ratio gives for a pleasing body when the fish fills out as it develops.

Tony

She's a two year old from Marudo. My dealer friend says she is AJKS quality. But no one from this board has made a comment yet. She is quite expensive for a 2 year old. 20 in.

The Kohaku reminds me of the Morales Marudo Kohaku. The skin quality from what I see in the pics looks high class. Probably the asking price is around $20K?

Michael

After looking over your photo and enlarging it, I would agree with Tony on this one. This appears to be very high class. It just needs to be grown out to 30+" to fit that heavy pattern. Then it won't appear so heavy. Wow, I can just picture this fish at over 30"!! With the quality maintained or even improved. Should be very serious fish for Gardena in a few years!!

After looking at this pic, it's very hard to tell skin quality. Looking at body confirmation I like the bottom fish, but the whole package together, I like the top fish. Seems to have better kiwa, it's tighter/cleaner looking, but then the sashi on the kugaki step is a bit messy. This may clean up very well as it grows and the shiroji becomes thicker, just not sure from the pics. The "flow" of pattern seems more enjoyable on the upper fish TO ME. I would have to see better photos or in person to say more. I would say that I would keep growing these out and see what happens. Both are nice study subjects.

the dealer said.... the Torazo (top fish) has the better skin quality. the bottom fish (Marudo)has little Matsunosuke gin between her dorsal and tail fin. we'll see what happens in the next couple of yrs.
