Thumbs up

I know nothing of good or bad as far as real quality goes...... However, I know what I like, and I like her! The "hammerhead shark" type pattern on the head is cool as heck!

Nice fish!

Read what Dick Benbow said in the recent issue of Koi Nations about the hump on the shoulders.

Nice looking fish but by 2 year old is it a nissai ? if not it is not going to be jumbo . As far as hump goes I do not like them but that is ones taste . Having seen meter long fish I did not see a prononced hump .
Regards
Eugene

Generally raising fish with humps in my experience have grown on to become stubby. The Sanke you have is nice, but I would like to see a side view of how over developed the hump is.

I also learned about hump size and growth potential from Dick Benbow during his tosai selection seminar. What he said is that if there's no hump at all then the koi will be thin and will not grow very big. However, like what Tony said, if the hump is too big, then the koi will be like a football, short and stout and stumpy. So what we are looking for is a koi with a moderate hump. But I think what's more important is that the koi should have at least 5.5 head lengths. This will ensure that the koi will not only grow wide but long as well. It's hard to assess how many head lengths your Marudo sanke is because of the angle of the pixs, so it's hard to judge. Overall, she looks like a very nice koi.

Hi Lam,

Where does the head stop for this measurement? Behind the gill plate?

Thanks

Grant

Hi Grant, yes a head length is from the tip of the head to the end of the gill plate. Now, if you take this length and apply it to the length of the koi, it should be at least 5 and 1/2 headlength long (this includes the head length). Anything shorter will give you a stumpy football-shaped koi. Longer is better as long as there is a decent hump and a broad shoulder. Hope the pros will chime in.
