| I too like to fool with a few tosai knowing that most likely they won't amount to much. There is the rare exception. The reason "I" don't think we see many high quality tosai come over from Japan is the US market. I'm surprised many people would spend 555 or 777 or 999 for a tosai. It just surprises me. I was in Japan in October and I was able to find some nice Nisai- 18 inches, female for $750, landed price in the US. This price includes a dealer commission but not the normal dealer markup. I think these fish would normally sell for $1500-$2000 depending on how good I did selecting them. I mean how could you go wrong with a fish of this quality at 18 inches, $750 and female?

| Mike I entirely agree with you, I attended too many nisai ikeage last year to ever contemplate spending spending serious money on a tosai. It gets even more crazy when people are spending expensive money on tosai shipped from Japan. Why are they shipped? Simple, in 99.9% of cases, because the breeder didn't back them or otherwise found a punter prepared to pay enough money for them that the breeder preferred the cash rather than taking the gamble themselves. | MikeP: You're asking whether a $1500 nisai at half price is a good deal? ...Is there a trick in there? Hmmmm.... well, what did the trip to Japan cost to get the half-priced nisai? BTW, nice one! Marudo? As a general principle, I do not disagree with anything being said about buying tosai unloaded by a breeder. I think the proper comparison is with the tosai the breeder has decided to keep to grow to nisai. Have you seen many of those for sale in Japan? |

| Every nisai I bought was once a tosai that the breeder decided to keep. On top of that, now I get to pick the nisai that came out looking nice, had good growth and was female. Now, I don't get the choice of the premium nisai(because I'm not going to spend that much money) or the ones the breeder is keeping through to sansai but my Vegas odds are much better than a tosai selection. I have been to Nisei KF and I'll be going back this Fall. |
