I think we all share the "dream" of selecting a tosai that will grow up to be a winner some day. Not just a baby or size 2-5 winner, but a BIG girl we can boast we raised right. I happen to know of a very lovely Sanke that may make that dream come true for a fellow Kichi someday.
That being said, we all are still faced with the reality that GC's are 1 in a million, and a serious long shot even when you buy then at gosai...
But we can still dream and try can't we

Very true. And it's a long shot at best. Of course, if you do pull it off... What's next? I guess breed yourself?? Talk about a long shot.

Lot's of intresting stuff! No offence taken. Just a few common observations from my limited experience.

I think the chances that the breeders will let a tosai with lots of potencial slip through their hand to be raised to a grand champion is very slim. But then there are Grand Champions and then there are Grand Champions. It all depends on the quality of the koi at that particular show. So it's been done and will be done again, but not with a $200 tosia. not that i know of. with tosai you pay more for the future potencial than what the tosai is worth on the day. THe good ones anyway.

We make a lot about pattern. As far as I know pattern counts very little of the overall points. I've never seen a amazing pattern outside of Japan that was not sold for an incredible amount. Even when I page through the Nichirin the koi with amazing patterns as far and few inbetween. Even in Japan they are limited. I deceided to stick to more common or traditional patterns (as that is what I can afford!) and try my best to make the best of all the other factors which I can control and improve like luster and confirmation.

Thanks for all the comments on my Kohaku. I named her Loraine after my grandmother that passed last year. I'll keep you posted on how she does at the show in August.
