I would have to say the tancho sanke would be perfect for a water garden and the sanke for a regular koi pond.

A koi pond. The depth will be over four feet. Probably somewhere between 6-8 feet in depth, but definitely over 4.

Sounds good. Do your homework, and build it once. And when in doubt.... Go bigger. I now apply the temperature rule... Whatever size you were thinking, double it, and add 30 just like when converting celsius to fahrenheit I'm currently planning pond #4.... all inside of a year and a half

Of course, for me, the building is almost as much fun

Hey HMartin, welcome to Koi-Bito. Whereabouts are you in Oregon? I live in Portland and was in your shoes not too long ago. Just like most hobbyists, I started with koi 4/$100 tosai that I purchased from the NWKG annual koi show. But I have found homes for all of these. Looks like you will be starting off much better than me if you were to start out with these koi. Welcome to Bito.

I'm in southwest Portland!

These three I listed are actually fairly cheap, about $200. I'm still considering waiting for the Portland show and seeing if there are any tosai that appeal to me there. But I might get the Sanke.

Decisions, as always.

Thank you for the welcome! I'm glad to see there are actually Oregonians here too!

My boyfriend and I are actually planning (dreaming) on purchasing some land as soon as we finish college. We hope to make some nice huge ponds, or possibly some mud ponds.

Either way, plans to go bigger are definitely in the future.

That's nice. you are off to a good start. Would you mind telling us what kind of filtration is being put in and dimension of the pond. What's the proposed volume of the pond?
