I didn't know they used 'koi caves' in mud ponds.

I'm not familiar with 'koi caves' but can guess what they are.

I suspect that you aren't far from the truth.

My guess is that this has been in mudpond to protect the Nishikigoi over wintered threre from being crushed by snow.
