We have a lilac bush at our house. The wife brought is a couple clippings. The smell is strong- even I can smell it throughout the house. I don't have any blooming bonsai yet. I'm finding it difficult to keep more than a half dozen trees- they need a lot of care.

less than 20 years old. After it gets done blooming, It'll get the blooms removed and a little bit of fertilizer to help with recovery. Mike, your right they do take a lot of care and i need to cut back on my 60 plus that I care for....I attached a picture of a black pine that I'm working with internationally known Peter Adams, Bonsai instructor to develop. From the UK, he lives not too far from me on the olympic penninsula.

just love lilacs, Dick. Thanks for that picture! Right now we have three blooming at our house. THere is one large bush in the front yard, and two alongside the house, both around 4-6 feet tall. Our house is close to the neighbor's house, so the air doesn't get much circulation there. Basically, the smell is overwhelming. It smells as though you just walked into one of those Bath and Bodyworks stores.

The smell is amazing....but I prefer it in moderation....

Set them free, I tell you! LOLs " Born free and living to die free"

The last of my bonsai were put in the ground one year ago. They really add to the garden. And I find the trees are much healthier even though I have planted them in 'confined holes' so that they can't really send out a deep tap root. Hopefully this will slow their reversion back into trees and bushes for a while. I still trim them a bit here and there. But nothing like the demands of ten years ago.
I think most bonsai go to their deaths early because they dry out while the owner is distracted. It doesn't take much- in some cases, just two-three days without water in certain climite conditions ( heat, sun, warm wind etc) and the tree is a goner. And of course, frost is a killer of all shallow rooted plants. Lots of challenges. Lots of work, and lots of worry. Especially when you are taking care of a dozen four figure specimens!
My maples are doing the best, 'in ground' and holding their shape OK for the moment. I'm sure that will not last. But man, are they ever healthy now! And no rushing home from vacation to see if they are still alive!
the worry free JR

Jim, I hear you!
Troy, that's a very nice satsuki! Be sure and take the dead flowers off it so it doesn't use it's strength to make seed.
