The weird weather contributed to this fire too. A fellow had a permit to burn brush to clear land, this is OK to do in a normal spring as the vegetation is still moist and green and the fire burns slowly and smoldering.
But we've had maybe half the rain we need and it stopped a month or so early. Plus last week we had a freak heat wave for three days at 100F plus heat, so everything is already really dry. Not a great time to ask for or be issued a burn permit. Someone just wasn't thinking.
Here's a map of the area of the Santa Cruz Mts. fire.
It's not a hugh fire, 3,000 + acres, but it's was heading towards an area with a fair amount of people. I know they evacuated about 300 or more homes. Lots of livestock in that area, horses, goats, etc. Most got evacuated to the Santa Cruz Fairgrounds, but some folks had the fire come so fast they only had time to let them free before they had to get out of there. I wonder what chance a koi pond would have in a big forest fire? I know there are a few in those mountain, been on koi pond tours in the area. Hope they are all right.
