Selling Koi for profit?

Hey guys. I'm a little new to owning Koi fish.
I was just wondering if it would be possible to buy Koi fish when they're small and sell them for profit when they're large.

I built a decent Koi pond in my backyard and I'm thinking about making it much larger if I can make a profit off of selling them.

Can I make a decent side income from growing and selling?

how long have you been in the hobby? I think you're in the wrong forum. Hobbiest in this forum don't sell or grow out koi to make money. Anyway goodluck to your endeavor. You're gonna need it.

This is a good question....Surprisingly there have been maybe 10 new koi dealers with little less than 5 years experience making money on a "use to be" hobby in the last 2 years. If you go to the other website there are many dealers there who started out as hobbyist.

Quick note: If your looking to be a dealer please, please take a trip to Japan and dont be one of those dealers who mention they have been to Japan to select fish when they havent.

The only way you could get money from koi is to hope you get half of what you actually paid for it. I'm talking about real quality koi.

If you take a small ten-dollar koi, care for it well, spend money on utilities and food, and the heron doesn't get it, you will end up with a large ten-dollar koi.

What you have not stated is why folks should want to purchase koi from you. What do you bring to the table? Are you doing the cheap and cheerful....and trying to compete with Wally world and petstores........or take a long term approach view and work your way into competing with higher end dealers like Kevin, Ray, Carl, Joel....?

The classic joke in the hobby is.... Want to make a small fortune as a koi dealer? If so, start with a large one.

Excellent responses this hobby is for pleasure not profit. Although, I had wondered if some folks purchase high end koi in Japan, raise them there and then through a dealer have them sold through the dealer if they mature and turn out better then expected. Has this happened to anyone?

Dealers really don't want to be involved in "re-selling" koi. For one thing, the customer that buys the fish takes away a potential sale from their current stock. In general, most hobbyist want to buy from a breeder or dealer and not another hobbyist unless it is a distress sale and they think they are getting a real bargain- but even then ....
