Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Give it a year in our harder water and it will look totally different - just a Goshiki?

I have one of these I bought from Otsuka in 2006. Now it looks exactly like the Kuro Goshiki I bought at the same time!

I think he would look nice in a show tank but get lost in your pond. I have a goshiki with less sumi (see avatar) and she barely shows up.

Mike (Koiczar): Very interesting. I've wondered about that. The Goshiki-Showa we see from Otsuka from time to time are very appealing. The blue-gray base adds a dimension to the other pigments making them seem high grade, creating an overall 'WOW' factor. But if that base does not stay blue-gray, everything special about it is lost. Sort of like the Kage Shiro Utsuri that just become flat mottled fish at age 5.

Yes, I think this fish will change dramatically . And by that, I mean grow darker.

When you look at a koi, you are looking at genetics and environment. And I think often we just see environment as either good water quality or bad, hard water or soft. Those things are important of course, but there is a third element- that is how competing gene expressings battle one another over time ( with age) and in certain environments. This is how some fish that look one way, change when they are moved to a different environment.
This fish is a mix of a showa gene expression and a karasugoi/asgai gene expression. The likelihood of hypermelanin gene expression increasing with age is very high.
Fish like metallics, fish with hypermelanistic genes, both tend to be 'perfect' in the younger ages/ sizes. It is a difficult look to hold as skin changes with age and the growing presence or hormones influence gene expression in new/different ways . JR

Here are some comparison photos. The first two are when purchased and the last one is "in pond" from a couple weeks ago. The Goshiki Showa is the lower of the two Kuro Goshiki. Quite a transformation, eh?
