Momotaro Sanke

I'm looking at this one. Nissai female, 52cm.
I like the clean simple pattern. Skin quality is very good. Sumi that came through is good. Body confirmation for a two year old is decent.

I've got to decide pretty soon and I've got no experience with Momotaro koi. Opinions please.

when we're talkin' understanding sumi

One of the things that is very hekpful in selecting two and three year olds is to have a picture of what it looked like as tosai. Often time black will return to it's original indications, when as a two year old the sumi fades away making a purchase harder to determine. In understanding what this bloodline was built on for sanke was matsunosuke, where black up and down the first few years is typical.

Sanke in particular, always seems to revolve around a solid shoulder patch and preferably in the white. Not much white in the shoulder area, not much black showing from the dorsal forward. Without knowing what this koi did from tosai on makes me a bit hesitant.

Sumi is usually stronger in the tail section

here is a sanke with the opposite situation from yours. It's a two year old now. this pic was taken at 1 1/2. This koi had sumi in the shoulder (albeit in the red) but no tail stop sumi which it needs desparately to complete the pattern. Since sumi is always strongest towards the tail, I took a chance with this koi to see what would happen. Todate, on it's left side just after the
heavy shoulder beni and before the first small beni spot youi can barely make out a touch of sumi. Right now that dot is a solid piece of sumi about the same size as the piece in front of it in the heavy shoulder beni and threatening to connect those two sumi spots into one big one. So I still have hopes this fall for black to appear furthur back. I have a picture of it as tosai but is too large a file for me to shrink it down ( if I knew how). There was not indication of black in the tail stop area, but one always has hope

Hi Dick,

If the bloodline is matsunosuke, should we expect momotaro sanke to grow long first before bulking up?

Thanks

If she was a Kohaku, I'd be excited. As a Sanke, the beni pattern does not permit her to become exciting. There is not enough shiro for the interplay of the three colors that makes Sanke exciting. But... If the sumi comes up on the shoulder, she will be a sweet fish. Everything else about her looks really nice.

BTW, I have a Momotaro Sanke that had no sumi from the dorsal forward at Fall harvest. She now has sumi in front of the dorsal. I'm hoping for one nice sized marking closer to the head.

There is sumi coming in on the one in your photo on her right side. I expect it will expand some. Wish I could say whether the chance of more coming together on her shoulder was good or poor, but I have no idea.

...Yeah, everything else looks really nice.

I've never owned a momotaro so by experience i can't say. But because of the lineage, that would be my expectation.

I took a look on the momotaro website where they had 3 sanke's and they tracked their developement. So i'm willing to gamble on the sumi with this breeder. Yes, sumi on shiro on the shoulder is a big plus but if she has so many other good qualities why not. I've finally reached the point where I'm mainly looking at skin quality and not pattern any more. I've got quite a few koi with the traditional patterns but their skin quality will never make them the champions I was hoping for. so now pattern is the last thing I look at.

A really good close-up of the kiwa would be nice. A side view would be nice also. If we're going to be limited to a picture, we need all the angles and close-ups we can get.

So for the new guy here... Erns, did you have a guarantee? Or is this fish being replaced based on integrity of the dealer alone?
