You're reputation as one of the truly good guys in this hobby is well deserved. Thanks for handling this situation with your usual class, honesty, and uptmost respect for your customers. You've set the bar for how all dealers should respond when confronted with possible KHV infections and no matter what the tests results are (hopefully no KHV), I'm sure your reputation and trust among hobbyists will remain strong as ever...

Joel,
I am very sorry to hear this sad news. Your reputation will be even more enhanced by your forthright handling of this terrible event. I hope that your koi will all test negative and that the breeder affected in Japan will be able to contain the outbreak and rebound quickly.

I am glad Joel did it this way. Step up to the plate and take care of business. It will help him in the long run!!! Of course...everyone wants to know who is the breeder?? Any word yet?

I think there's going to have to be a lot of testing done before a breeder could or should be named. Joel's doing the right thing in this complex situation. Conjecture can travel like truth on the net, which is a danger to the innocent.

Thanks Joel for being so up front and please keep us informed as things unfold.

I am sure if you are one of Joel's customers, and have bought fish from any of the ponds that Joel may be concerned with.. You will be one of the first to know who the breeder is......

Does anyone have a contact for where you can get fish tested, or send swabs? I think I'll be testing my fish as part of the quarantine process from now on. It doesn't seem to be expensive and although the test results aren't 100% I think it would be a nice addition to my quarantine protocols from now on.

Thanks,

Grant

Grant, the only way to get a pulse on KHV in your own collection is to have blood drawn and the sample sent to the Univ of GA. Swabbing is not effective unless the fish are shedding the virus (already sick). Even with serology testing you can get false positives so be prepared to take second samples if any test comes back positive. Anything can cause the sample to become contaminated which could distort the results so a vet that knows what they are doing is your best bet.

Here Grant, this is who zna is currently recommending :

UC Davis is happy to offer laboratory validated KHV testing using both
Taq-man PCR for viral genomic DNA($40 per sample for 1-19; $36 per
sample for 20+) and a KHV Elisa to detect fish antibodies to the virus
($25 ea for 1-19 samples; 20+ samples@ $22 each; + $30 veterinary
consultant fee per batch of samples). Other molecular and diagnostic
tests are available upon request for KHV and other fish related
pathogens.

You can contact the ZNA blog for additional information. I'll put it by the ned of the weekend. JR

Thank you very much JR and Sue.

Do you guys just heat cycle and extend quarantine times? Or do you have blood sent off and tested?

Kevin Pham at Genki koi has informed me that he is offering KHV testing services to his clients provided they pay the $100 testing fee, which includes shipping to UG. So if you have koi with Kevin, you may want to take advantage of this service.
