Why should a hobbyist pay this fee? I thought Kevin was already testing ALL of his fish (other than tosai) via blood serology!?!?!!?!?!?

Tony

Somewhere, I thought I had read that Kevin tested all his larger stock. I guess quality level plays a part as well, so, if I'm incorrect, and only the "high class" fish get tested then I stand corrected. Of course, whenever your shipment comes in and they are mixed during QT procedures, does it really do any good to random test fish?-I think not! This protocol seems to be the norm here in the Bay Area. I can't speak for others as I have never done business with them.

This is an interesting back and forth. IF I go by my gut reaction and my feeble memory, 1 in 100 imports from Japan is positive for KHV. At one point in the 1990's, 1 in 3 imports from Israel was positive for KHV. And from Malaysia and Taiwan in the late 1990s, 1 in 4 was postive for KHV. And from China- " forget about it!"

I would like to see a dealer test every fish for KHV, but that is not economically feasible or maybe even sensible? Random testing is of course a good idea with heat testing being done on every imported shipment as a 'standard idea/ practice '.
I think if you look at the satistics, Japan is the least likely of all carp exporting countries to have KHV. But because Japan STILL exports the best nishikigoi in the world, they will be the most scrutinized and we will get a distorted impression from the ocassional positive.
This can have the effect of distorting the common nature of KHV. IMHO. JR

I have never bought from Joel, so that is not my issue. We are having a koi show next weekend in Ma....So, of course I'm concerned. There is one dealer there who does sell fish from Joel. I'm am only slightly worried about my fish entering the show, as precautions are taken. I am more concerned if I see anything from a dealer I would like to purchase. It definitely takes the fun out of the event to not purchase any new koi...but, for the sake of safety...we do what we must.

I thought Kevin does KHV testing every time a new fish comes in. Not for every single fish but for every batch. Can someone clarify this?

You can ask Kevin, but I do not think so. One that would be very costly especially at $100 per test. What Kevin has told me is he is aware of the KHV outbreaks in the USA, and feels confident his koi are okay. But if any client would like to test there koi he will be happy to do so for $100.

I would be confident enough with him if he does a batch KHV testing. One koi for every batch and every breeder.

This is what we will be doing as a participant in the BHP program.

Batch testing is fine, PROVIDED you keep EACH BREEDER'S FISH SEPARATE. Mixing from the trans shipper is a concern and then it falls on the dealer. Guess who gets the blame for mixed batches. Also, you've now just cross contaminated your ENTIRE SHIPMENT rather than just one breeder's fish. Does this make sense? At this point, I only personally know of ONE dealer who does this(separate breeder's fish in each tank)!
