Actually I have been admiring Burt's for the last 10 years ,

Burt and Gloria, have some of the most beautiful staghorn ferns that I have ever seen. They have a very large collection of them, some are 4 to 5 foot diameter. I have always wanted one, but our backyard was 100% full sun, I had bought a few and of course killed them over the years. A few years back we covered 80% of our backyard, due to my melanoma.

Anyway Burt called me last week, and said that Gloria and him wanted to give Frank and I one of their "big" ones, I was so excited, to be getting one. Frank went to pick it up yesterday and this thing is massive it is at least 4 foot in diameter and just so beautiful.

Frank and his worker got it loaded on the truck, they hung it off the center beam off his rack. They where driving home and the damn pot cables snapped. There was no way to repot it, so Frank, welded a steele circle for the base and attached chains to it, so we could get it hung up, we where so affraid of damaging it.

So this is my new stag, I Even named it lil Ballou

Nancy,

I love the new fern that Burt gave Frank. They really look great around a pond and are easy to care for. Mine love bananas.

Unfortunately this variety (Superbum) does not send out pups like many of the stags do. The spores from the fronds have to be mixed with another ferns and the slow growing process begins. Maybe Burt has one that we can mix the spores with and start some.

I love staghorns - have one that used to be about eight feet in diameter until the hail storm here in April; there was no warning about the possibility of hail and I couldn't go out and move it back inside while tennisball-sized hail was falling.. It's coming back but I know it'll be slow going; I've had it for at least 25 years. Have you Californians visited Sherman Gardens in Corona Del Mar? I was once a member there - they have absolutely spectacular staghorns! My favorite was a huge "moosehead" one - I've searched in vain for a start of that for years.
