growth...is this normal for two months?

5 to 9 inches, and can we say "tailtube" difference!

I am only buying Japanese koi in the future, with a few exceptions. Is this showa just catching up from being underfed for a little while???

Sure looks a lot better now heh? It was really thin before and looks like the last two months made up for lost time. But keep up the good work! The next joy will be finding how much black you have coming yet....

Ethan

Stop feeding the "roids" will ya! Some fish, whether domestic or Japanese bred will turn on the growth spurt if all parameters meet with their needs. That is very nice growth, but please, don't assume that ALL Japanese fish are going to do this. I've had too many over the years that DIDN'T and a few that did during the first season. Keep up the good work with this one and let it grow, let it grow.

You should be able to get it to 14" by October with all systems in synch. Seems you are well on the way.

from what I am being told on another board, the showa has a head deformity, in that one side is longer than the other.....

still going to see how it grows and developes.....

Yup. The photo's you posted here are too small (the first one) and a poor angle (the second one) for comment, but the straight down shots you had over at KP pretty much confirm it. That is still some butt kickin' growth and a good looking pond fish though. You WILL learn from it's good qualities while you have it.

If the head is lopsided, you will be able to tell better in person than in a photograph. Photograph angles can do strange things. Our eyes end up 'interpreting' the photo to see what is expected. In person, the brain processes the info more accurately.

I can't tell if the head is crooked or not, but I can tell you that you are doing one heck of a job with this koi's growth....from a skinny 5" showa to a pretty healthy-looking and chubby 9" koi is quite impressive.....care to share with us the specs of your pond and what you feed them, etc?
