Izeki paste, an aquired taste?

I made an Izeki paste a couple of weeks ago and it seems like they don't like it. The koi will swim toward the paste take a sniff then turn quickly around. On that 1st try only about 2 koi ate the small amount I made.

I made another batch again this week using JR's recipe posted by Dr. Bob and this one really stinks to me. Smells like catfish bait. The original 2 koi that ate it really liked it this time. A few other joined in but I still have many that snub their noses at it, acting like "Do we look like catfish to you?"

What are some of your experiences in using Izeki?

Mine LOVE it.. Always have, never had any turn there nose up at it. Does JR's recipe have cherry flavored cod liver oil in it? That smell I think gets to my girls. When I am making there paste balls, I sit outside they can smell it I swear, they go nuts the entire time I am making there balls.

There's a new owner to miracle koi food (Paula met her at the Roseburg, Or. Show) I am feeding her new mix to my koi. The first time I threw it in, they rushed up to it then tuened away. The next time I fed, I held back their regular food so they were good and hungry and then fed it and got a few nibbles. To make a long story short, after several weeks of exposing them to it they swarm to it now. I really think you feed small amounts on a consistant basis and kinda get em used to it......oh and on the miracle food, they take the sinking stuff first then come back up for the floating

I have been making batches of Izeki the last couple of weeks and my fish like the stuff. Here's what I has been adding to the Izeki paste:

This is to 2 cups of Izeki:
2 tablespoons of Carnation Dehydrated milk
1 tablespoon of Izeki Super Clean C
1.5 tablespoon of Izeki Chintnol
1 tablespoon of Cod Liver Oil
2 tablespoon of honey mixed with water to bind the whole mixture

When mixing the Izeki and the other ingredents it should almost come out to the consistancy of fresh pasta dough. If you mix it too wet add more Izeki or pako(Japanese Bread crumbs) to make it a bit dry.

Izeki tends to have alot more animal protein and if you choose to break it down with plant I would use mashed Japanese Sweet Potato.

I also have a recipe for a lighter paste food:

2 lbs of Japanese Sweet Potato(either baked or boiled)
-if boiled make sure to remove as much moisture as possible-
2 tablespoons of Carnation Dehydrated milk
1 egg
1 tablespoon of Izeki Super Clean C
1.5 tablespoon of Izeki Chintnol
1 tablespoon of Cod Liver Oil
2 tablespoon of honey
1/2 cup of good Japanese beeru
Pako to bind the mixture

mix everything together, it should the same consistancy as pasta dough...

Just to recap: if you dont have Izeki Super Clean C or Izeki Chintnol then you can use Refresh, etc as a replacement....

Thanks for sharing your recipe Tonio. And I thought that I was good to go by mixing the izeki paste w/ just plain tap water. Is there a place where I can get my hands on some Izeki chintnol & Izeki Super Clean C?

Also, Flounder, I have heard a lot of members mention JR's izeki paste food recipe, but can't seem to find that recipe anywhere. Care to share where I can find JR's recipe? Thanks in advance.

Eastern Nishikigoi is the US Distributor of Izeki.....You can put in an order with them....

Another product you can supplement for Izeki Super Clean C is Bio Healthy Deluxe if you can get it.

But to be honest with you Lam, Izeki Chintnol is like gold so you better put in an order fast, because once people know it is in it is sold really quick!!!

The following is the recipe posted by Bob in his Su grow out thread:

"one fillet of catfish (uncooked)
Spinach (some don't like the acid content of spinach- then use collared greens)
Frozen peas (again some don't like this for koi- including Sakai)
One large red bell pepper
whole wheat germ
Izeki paste food- equal amount as the wheat germ you use
A good liquid baby vitamin and or a good reptile vitamin- some say" what's the difference! "
Chop all in a food processor, then add heated orange juice (2 cups) in which you have mixed in 4 packets of non flavored gelatin.
Pour out on a cookie tray no more than a 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick and refrigerate.
If the material is too thin due to moisture when you pour it out on the cookie tray then put back in the food processor and add more Izaki paste food and wheat germ "

I didn't have a catfish filet on hand so I just used some halibut I had in the freezer.
