Please Critique This Yamatoya Kohaku

This is a late spawning kohaku that we bought a few weeks ago, she is only 25cm. The reason we bought her was her intereting beni which may become rather pleasing when she grows. To our untrained eyes it looks like she has a good body structure with a long square mouth hinting at a possible 70cm plus fish. We took a gamble and spent the same money as we would on a nisai, what do you guys & glas think, money well spent?

I really like that fish.

Nice heavy confirmation/tail tube. The beni has a nice soft luster to it. I really like the marusome kiwa. The beni in the dorsal fin may pull down as she grows... Pleasing pattern to my eye. Again, I'm a newbie, but she looks great to me.

Who is the breeder?

This does not look like a 25cm koi. It seems to have everything going for it, including a great pattern. But, to be that well-developed at 10 inches concerns me. I would like a more experienced eye to explain this one to me.

OOOOH...I think you have a winner there!!! I like everything about it. Conformation, sashi, kiwa, pattern...NICE!!! I would take that one in a minute....excellent choice. We definitely need pics as that one grows.

I think I'm in the same quandary as Mike. At only 25 cm it has a very "adult" looking frame. If you hadn't stated the size I would have guessed much bigger. The overall conformation looks very strong and well proportioned and the hi plates are well balanced with good sashi depth and hoshi to go along with the nice clean marusome kiwa. Not being familiar with the breeders lines I really don't know what to think, but if I had been in your shoes I would have been sorely tempted too.

I dont like the head. I would perfer a longer head on tosai, this to me is a sign of future growth...In my opinion I dont think this Kohaku will grow much, even if it is a late spawn.

The breeder is Yamatoya, not a dealer that I know much about, but from the high quality examples I have seen at my dealer's. I will definitely be watching out for them.

As most of you have noted already, she appears to be fully developed even at such a small size. This brings me to my main concern, if she is this developed, has she peaked too soon and will fade at a disproportinately young age?

LOL, I guess "Please critique this Yamatoya Kohaku" wasn't enough of a giveaway for me!

Enjoy!

OLDSLUGGER, you got your critique and I suspect it mirrors that of your own. Yes, this koi has a lot in its favour BUT is there a question mark about the future development of the body ? I think there is as it displays the frame of an older koi in my opinion. But you got to be happy with a koi like that in your pond, I would be.
