now those look like they have been painted!!! Beautiful!

your shots of the gin have had me thinking about scales too.
all scales have some reflextion to them right? (kinda sure but not sure here, purhaps it is like hair, healthy hair shines but damaged or unhealthy hair is dull)
so what point does it become considered ginn?

Nowthat's a great question, Meg. I'm no foremost authority by any stretch of the imagination, but I would think that high lustre over the right shaped face of reflective scale becomes gin when it reflects light instead of the true color of the skin. Hence silver light reflections over shiroji and golden light reflections over beni, and I'm thinking that the thicker and less translucent the skin, the less there will be ginrin (though there can certainly be lustre to the skin depending on its quality, like when a nice deep pool of sumi gobbles up ginrin instead of being overcome with it, taking over with it's own silky texture), similar to your hair shine analogy. This is only a theory of mine though, and subject to revision as the truth reveals itself in my studies.

Have you been taking pics of your cuties? I'm ever so curious about your Luke fish, because it was one of my pearl/lustre hopefuls and would have been here instead of the Little Blue if you hadn't chosen it. It's so hard to catch on camera, I know. *nodnodnod* But I'd sure like to see if I saw what I thought I saw in its first pic....

Somewhere here at KB is a diagram of the structure of scales. I've been looking for it, but haven't been able to find the thread it's in yet. Does anyone know where it is, or have one that can be posted here for reference?

For a good read on ginrin, check out this past thread. Lots of good info from the best out there:

Doing The Sumi Dance

Up and down, up and down.... Mikado's face is still percolating sumi, or rather undulating.

Not as bleak as the inbetween a couple of weeks ago, but still on the move. Check out her pec fin on our left--not solid white anymore, but with a stripe of sumi, as is the line of her gill plate. Leading ray nice and white, in fact, lustrous. Can't be seen in the pic, but I see it here.

Notice the underlying sumi just over her eye on the right...

...interesting pattern if it emerges.

And finally a close up--oh the frail and fickle beauty of youth....

And a few of the Little Blue as she grows. Put on a little bulk and about 1/4" length or so...

Putting on a few hints of sumi, but pattern is still a mystery.
