That surprises me, but I wouldn't read too much into it. Seasonal changes in water chemistry and growth rates on young Koi can play games with Sumi. Ours had very similar development on Sumi to yours during the first year and at one time the sumi even appeared to be breaking up, but it then came back strong again. We have a Bekko (different type of sumi, I know) whose jet black sumi goes almost completely down during heavy growth periods only to return stronger later.
A friend of ours purchases a Shiro a few years back with great skin and only submerged sumi to guide them. I didn't have a camera with me the last time I saw her, but time and patience has been very kind to her sumi to say the least.
