Hi Luke,
Thank you for checking up on me because it is very possible I messed up-Newbie that I am! I just double checked to be sure and they are the right photos and different Koi. Guess it shows what I like as they are very similar. While making my picks I was focusing on a checkerboard pattern and they kind of resemble that ( I think??) considering I didn't get my first favorite choices. Terri

terri,
I am amazed that you and others are picking koi that are so similar to each other. Am I right in figuring that you think you know what these koi will do, and you are just concentrating on that?
me I am going to take three fish with as many variables as I can...well i am not going to take koi that have undeniable faults....

Humm a question not answered but followed with a question....(sort of)
Time for me to learn.
Do you agree that my picks are even checkerboard in pattern?
This admitted newbie has a lot to learn unlike you who knows about "undeniable faults". I can learn from you!
But to answer your question-
As they often say, I don't love in slices, I love as a whole.
I went with what appealed to my eye. I would have taken a torn fin if I liked the whole pattern enough. My favorites were #157 and next #64 but they were taken before me. I focused on what I hoped to eventually see from the water's surface. ( I did ask another what they thought of my choices so as not to make a fool of myself) For me I like a pattern that flows (close to even) on the back and character on the head. I really didn't focus on motoguru or the tail stop. I read that early heavy motoguru was undesirable in tategoi so I steered from that. I am curious if you believe that as well?
I do like my choices and if anything they will look like twins which will help me to choose fun names for them!!
I am pretty certain I won't win anything, but I didn't join in for that. My main goal is to learn but I am really looking forward to watching everyone's Koi develop from the original photos and have fun with this group along the way as I know most of us are. Your's being so different was certainly a great way to learn. I would also like to see (when all is said and done with this contest) follow-up photos of them all around age 3- 4 and even older. Wouldn't that be fun?
If you don't mind -What are your top three faults-not including torn or mis-shaped fins? Terri

Let's just describe your fish
They have alot of upside to them...
and you shouldn't talk of pattern unless you are going for baby champion.
Honestly,
the pattern is not at all set in stone, but yes you have "checker-boarding" (not alot) and Motoguro

but if we compare these Shiros in 4 years there will be perhaps five of us that still have them.
I have a sanke ( I hate Sankes) from a SKA grow out from three years ago. i would have put it under the mango trees years ago, but I agreed to do a grow out. And it is my koi. It was diseased for two years..but i think it is getting better. It never got really weak, but it got thin and was colored in a pink slime, almost red. But now it is coming out of it.

Tell me more. EX. Do you think they are female?
That is sad to think very few will have them in 3-4 years. I don't know about sankes but isn't that when SU develop their best black?

Um
I'll tell you how the top breeders can guarantee that the tosai you buy is female.
1 they tell you it is a guaranteed female.
2 It turns out to be male.
3 they give you another koi, guaranteeing that it is female.

Not much more you can say about em...
they don't show any serious flaws.
