I received my grow out fish yesterday. They were in very good condition.

#38 -#1, pick overall was 9.75" and looked very impressive. the picture I took don't do it justice. The beni was thick and the motoguro was very tight on both sides. I'm hoping the sumi will develop slow and strong but I'm not really sure what to expect. I remember a very wise man saying choose tosai by the strength of the beni and hope for the rest. That was the reasoning behind selecting this fish... besides it 's conformation and size.

#7 - 31st pick overall came in at 8". I think I'd like to have this pick over. I'm not sure what I was thinking except I thought it was bigger than it turned out to be. Oh well, it'll be interesting to see them grow together.

In addition to these picks I selected two others to grow out and while they not in the contest, they all are very different and should provide for an interesting learning experience.

Meg,
Thanks on 38. I'm hoping I'm better at pick'n Showas than Shiros. Course with the #1 pick you really put yourself on the line. We'll see.

Thought I'd show some current pictures of my Ogata Showas. They've had a couple of months since I got them and they seem to have adjusted to their new home. They were moved to the big pond 7/18/2008.
Koi #38 was the first overall pick.
Here's what she looked like the day she was moved to the big pond.

8/22/2008 after a month in the pond.

This is what she looks like next to the 14.5 'Best Male' winner, at the Upper Midwest Koi Show in Minneapolis.

My second pick was Showa #7.
On moving day, 7/18/2008 she looked like this. Note the bit of red on her mouth.

A month, 8/22/2008, later, 8/22/2008, the red is gone.

She enjoys swimming with the larger fish. Here she's hanging with a Brady Showa.
