    "Ameteur" Omosako Shiro evaluations

OK guys, while we wait for everyone to chime in for Jim's final editing we need something to keep ourselves entertained dontcha think???
Maybe "Edutainment" would be a better word.

How's about we start an informal poll on things like,

    1. Biggest Nice Surprise of the contest. Which entrant turned out a lot better than you thought it would?
    2. Most Disappointing Surprise of the contest. Which entrant did you have high hopes for that didn't pan out?
    3. Your personal Top 5 "Today" list.
    4. Your personal top 5 "Tategoi" list.
    5. Which ones do you think have the best show prospects this year?
    6. Which ones do you think have the best show prospects 2 or 3 years down the road?
    7. Which one do you think belongs under Luke's Mango tree?
    ...
    Any other suggestions???
Toss in some things you think might work to add to the list.

It might be fun to see how our lists compare with the REAL experts

I have something we can discuss.

In looking at all the pics, my fish seem to be the only ones that are yellow. I have one of the grow out Shiros not in the contest in a separate pond from those in the contest. This fish is also yellow.

As a note, I have other fish in both ponds, one is a Brady Shiro and 2 are these grow out fish, that are snow white.

I've been told to keep the yellow fish, they are better quality. My Brady Shiro is 6 and has gone from being yellow for 5 years to white. Is this a progression that you have to wait out? Can it be my water?

Larry, I'll try to get a list together this weekend. This could be fun.
The views expressed above are my own personal views and, as such, do not necessarily reflect the views of the AKCA or the KHA program.

Can we chime in even if we weren't part of the grow?

Why the heck not? There are plenty of insights to be gained from people who have no fish in the competition. If anything the absence of personal connection to any of the Koi should prove quite valuable.

My amateur neophyte most-favorite-to-win-this-contest is Koicjl's #156. Can't get much better than this, IMHO. But let's wait to see what the experts say.

    First... a lengthy disclaimer...

I'm a newbie, so my opinion is worth about what you dump from your vortex each day.

I didn't look (on purpose) to see who the owner's were and I honestly have no idea who's fish is who's. I figured no bias this way. I hope I don't offend one of my mentors with my comments. I'm going to go look at who's fish is who's after I click "submit reply"

This was a good exercise for me, and thanks for the opportunity to publicly display my ignorance...

    1. Biggest Nice Surprise of the contest. Which entrant turned out a lot better than you thought it would?

There were a few suprises for me. But I guess 156 was the most. I really thought that fish would be over-run with sumi, but the white has shined through brilliantly. Well done.

    2. Most Disappointing Surprise of the contest. Which entrant did you have high hopes for that didn't pan out?

#47... I couldn't say I had high hopes, but would have never guessed it could fall off the confirmation/sumi planet so drastically. The skin looks brilliant, so maybe down the road this koi will come back and blow everyone away... but for now

    3. Your personal Top 5 "Today" list.

    For today's show...
    1st - #124
    2nd - #113
    3rd - #33
    4th - #81
    5th - #127

    4. Your personal top 5 "Tategoi" list.

    For the future...
    1st - #150
    2nd - #120
    3rd - #116
    4th - #93
    5th - #41

    5. Which ones do you think have the best show prospects this year?

See my list of "now" fish

    6. Which ones do you think have the best show prospects 2 or 3 years down the road?

See my list of "tategoi" fish

    7. Which one do you think belongs under Luke's Mango tree?

uhh, sorry to the owner but.... I'd toss #171

Well my favorite at this point would be
    #81
While lacking in pattern, the shiroji on #127 was stunning.

Keep 'em coming. Plenty of good thoughts already and there is much for all of us to gain by seeing them.
Grant, I like the way you laid out your answer, but I think you give your personal learning curve too little credit. Having the cajones to post your thoughts without taking anyone's "toes" into consideration is absolutely the way to go. We're all grownups here and this ain't the "pretty fish" forum

Ok, now I've gone back and noted the # that they were picked in, as well as who picked 'em...

    Some observations:

trac and mstrseed both have a fish in my "now" and "tategoi" category... IMHO, nice choices!!

Bill (mstrseed) picked my favorite koi for "today" 95th! Passed over by a lot of people...

mtnponder picked one in my top five for the 136th pick! Again... passed up

Jeff Speck picked 1st, and picked my top choice for tategoi

koicjl has a good eye... picked my "most improved/suprise" and my second choice for "today"

In order of who picked when...

My top five (in order) for "today" consisted of:

    95th pick
    55th pick
    28th pick
    24th pick
    136th pick

My top five (in order) for "tategoi" consisted of:

    1st pick
    80th pick
    116th pick
    35th pick
    7th pick

And I'm sorry Dan (powerman)... well, what the heck, #171 was the 144th picked... I'm sure it was down to slim pickin's at that point.
