What kind of blue koi is this?

    Hi,

Can someone let me know what kind of blue koi is this?

    See link for photo:

Living in Japan - 3 Months at a Time Blog Archive Photo #98 - Magnificent Blue Koi in Maruoka Castle’s Koi Pond

I have not seen this type of blue koi before, certainly not this deep blue/indigo colour and it is fully scaled too, not Doitsu.

I hope Japan will ensure a line for this type of blue koi is perpetuated if this specimen is a one-off mutation, as the blue/indigo colour on this fish is extraordinary.

    Thanks.

    Bill

That photo does not show the real color. In person that fish would be a dull gray.

Bill, it's an interesting cross bred. Like identifying mixed breed dogs, sometimes you can see a strong 'german shepard' influence or a 'strong lab' influence but then you see what could be some kind of spaniel or husky in the mix. And ironically an owner then can name two different breeds that actually produced the mystery!
In the case of your koi there is a huge asagi mix going on, no doubt. The pattern tells us that more than the blue color. But I also see soragoi and maybe a hint of ochiba shigure ( often the result of soragoi x a dorsal patterned fish such as kohaku or sometimes X a chagoi) in that fish- indeed it could be a combination of all ! Let's call it a unique asagi and be content with that for a pond grade fish like this. Lovely color though. Proving, every koi has something to admire. - JR

That kind of fish is called a “Photoshop”.

JR must be BS’n you, if such a fish actually existed in would be fantastically valuable. Mike is right, it is a picture of an ochiba that has been colored.

Blue is a structural color. This fish if it existed is showing Raleigh scattered constructively reinforced blue. In koi this type of scatter happens only in gin rin. And arguably in white. Asagi and shusui blue is from Tyndall Scattering and can at best get to a kind of powder blue. But, by all means keep looking, I should suggest checking out that place where koi turn into dragons.

No, I'm not. How much would you pay me for a fish like that one Rob?

lilac with gold pearl gin rin

I am afraid that particular fish exists not in Japan but in only in the land of Jpeg. But if there is another, show me your fish and I’ll make you an offer. Should I meet you on the river by the waterfall? Although I’d prefer a purple one if you can, I am thinking lilac with gold pearl gin rin.

JR: Don't you see some rift lake cichlid blood in that pigment?

that fish is "blue" because it is about to die...look in amongst the rocks and on the floor of the pond...it must have lost several hundred scales and shed blue skin throughout the entire pond..
or are those its fry hiding amongst the rocks?
