Yes Medicarp is made by JPD and is the same company from the article that Mike is referring to. It is a legit company that has been around for years now.....although.....khv food? Really? Put me in the skeptical catagory on this one.

Let's see what happens in the food carp world...that is where the real facts will lie....
it will be obvious ...if sales soar for a protracted time in that sector it will be working

My guess is that a fish food to prevent KHV is another very good marketing ploy, like the vaccine, to take money from folks but in reality give them nothing in return. I was unaware that KHV could be cultured in hen's eggs. Up to now I understand KHV is cultured in fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) cells.

No vaccine or magic food is going to eradicate KHV from the hobby.

Better testing, being able to identify exposed, and latent carriers for a longer time post exposure, and euthanizing all koi testing positive (even the "vaccinated" ones) could remove this disease from the hobby. Short of that we will live with the problem until the hobby meets its ultimate demise.

Brett
I am of the same opinion but I asked my wife who was an infection control nurse. The way she explained was that a dead virus in an egg would be a dead virus or low level of the virus and the fish reaction to it would produce an antibody reaction so it is quite believeble. So if a person had a virus carrying fish and purchased a fish from a dealer the new fish would live if the dealer fed it the anti virus food or so it is hoped. I hope that this does
not incurage people to hold on to infected fish.
All my fish came from one breeder in the last four years for safety but a virus can grow even in a cell of bacteria and we still have so little knowladge of KHV.

Eugene

I have read that 75% of adult humans carry the herpes virus..1 or 2, oral or genital. If they can't find a cure in humans with all the money and research, I don't think it will be beaten in koi very quickly.

Assuming it actually works as described (and I would not trust it at this point!), I am wondering if the benefit is due to the antibodies preventing the carrier from becoming contagious, as opposed to giving the virus-free fish a short term immunity.

Sure hope Brett has contacted his person in the know!!!!

So nothing has been stated as to exactly how much of the food a koi must take in to deem the fish immuned? One pellet, a pound of pellets, 50 lbs? and how do you measure how much the fish ate if a certain amount is needed? Looking forward to hearing from Brett.

The Rinko article states: "Please note that this 'IgY Food' doesn't aim at curing KHV virus disease for the koi."

Elsewhere it states: "This is essentially different from the KHV vaccine developed in Israel. Vaccination aims at letting the fish make an antibody in a direct way, while Japan's product is designed as a supplement type of medicine to the diet." ... translation clarity is an issue.

My impression is that the food has to be used continuously. The chicken-produced antibody does battle with the virus, but does not cause the carp to produce antibodies of its own.

[Being almost as cynical as Luke for a moment, the combination of widespread use of the Israeli vaccine and a patent on this chicken-produced antibody would make for a level of financial success few koi breeders can ever hope to attain.]

These are some of the claims that Izeki made about using Super Clean C and Magic Stone products before.

Seems like something to boost sales.

FYI...

I'm not yet sure what name may be selected for the new IgY food... but Medicarp K is not the IgY food. Instead, Medicarp K is an improved version of JPDs immune stimulating product.

The new IgY product has not yet been exported to the US. The initial production run (manufactured late last year) was completely sold out to several Japanese customers, including Sakai Hiroshima.

Regards,
Bill
