Bill, Medicarp K is the IgY food according to a lot of information from Japan, and is not sale yet in public, even in Japan but it has been available for some limited people, including few breeders that I know personally.

Hi Junichi san,

I trust all is well with you!

I'm sure there is some confusion about the name... myself included! Like I said, I am not sure what name will be (or has been) given to the IgY food from JPD. I suspect that it will be (or is) called Super Medicarp K, and hence the confusion?

In any event, this is a direct email we received from Ryuichi Yoshida (the CEO of JPD);

Asahi did not receive IGY koi food. When I was at Asahi shop, I explained this issue to Mayumi-san. She understood everything. On the other hand they have Medicarp-K. But not IGY inside.

I bring this up only to clarify what is currently available here in the US.

Best Regards,
Bill

I sent the article in Rinko to a KHV researcher in the U.S. They called the technique used "passive immunization." They did not think it would be a very effective method to prevent viral infection, but could potentially reduce the viral exposure to some degree.

If it becomes available in the U.S. it would interesting to have it tested independently to determine it's effectivenes in preventing infection of KHV.

Hi Bill, I hope you are doing great.

Regarding to a name of the product, dealers in Japan call it as Medicarp K, including Narita. http://www.narita-ryuki.com/archives/563 . I don't know how to use a function to translate Japanese to English.....( it does not really matter for us what name will be given to that product for the U.S. market though.)

Thank you for clarifying what is currently available in the U.S. We had our club monthly meeting at Asashi just about a year ago and were introduced Medicarp K by them, (although I didn't really remember the name clearly)

As you know and as jnorth mentioned, JPD is a legit company. I don't think they release "Fake" produce to the market....

Say Hello to my friend, Shawn.

OK ...so the chicken creates the antibodies and the koi absorbs them from the food????????
Cuz if the Koi absorbs the antigen then creates antibodies then the immunization IS NOT PASSIVE.

I have not yet seen in print what EXACTLY is the product in the food..is it antigen or antibody..I won't beleive either until I see it in print fromTHEM. The literature I have read does not clearly say.

Not buying it for a minute (literally or figuratively!).

I'm in the biotech industry and companies pay millions and millions to formulate antibody drugs in such a way that they are either stable in a liquid solution or lyophilized so that they can be reconstituted in water and remain viable/active.

We're supposed to believe that they can take some sort of antibody raised in chickens and somewhow throw it into a koi food formulation and that these antibodies are going to (a) remain intact and (b) miraculously become active when eaten by a koi?

Antibodies are sensitive protein molecules -would love to be proven wrong, but it sounds like snake oil to me!

......and on top of that, for antibody drugs to work in mammals they have to be injected because the gut breaks them down. Koi obviously have a different gastric system to mammals, but I would bet that proteins are still broken down pretty quickly when ingested!
