Ugly showa - turning out better

So, while in Chicago back in early May, we picked up a Kin Showa that I had Shin Kawayoke (of Koi and POnd Supply of Japan) pick up for me in Japan. My wife offered a friend of ours in town to buy a couple fish for her, as Shin had a group of nice Suda and Ogata Tosai for sale for $30-$50. My wife bought two, nothing with any good pattern. In fact, she picked one that had great skin quality and conformation, just a lousy beni pattern that was really weak.

When we got back, she asked if we could keep this one, and give away some pond spawns that were much bigger. Since this was was 5-6" long, and the other two she wanted to give away were 14-16", I figured that it'd be better on the filtration.

So, after quarantine, it went in the pond. Seeing the weak beni, my hope was that it was on its way out the door, and that the sumi would remain strong, potentially making a nice shiro. I didn't tell her this though, becuase she thought the beni was nice.

I left town for 2 weeks, and got back on saturday. I walked over to the pond, looked in and thought, what the heckisthat?!

    I netted it.

Fed it a mixture of blackwater max, blackwater gold, and OSI 168 for 42 days, and this is what happened.

Hopefully the beni continues to leave....my suspicions are that it will, it just may take a bit of time for the strongest part to go. But not bad for 42 days, huh?

5.5" when purchased, now a solid 9".....all in 42 days.

Thoughts? Think it will continue to lose the beni? I know it's a tossup as to whether it will, but it looks weak enough that it will all go.

Looks like you have the making of a Shiro. That's good all of the beni is going and I would suspect all of it to go in the next couple of months. Most people who buy nice Shiros have problems with secondary hi, so you have the direct opposite.

because this one had so much beni early on, will it be more prone to secondary hi in the future? Or no becuase of how it is leaving so quickly?

Well the fish can not deny nature, the fact that it is Showa there might be a chance secondary hi might come up. In my early days I used to have a Showa that lost all it's beni, but in the 4th or 5th year secondary hi started coming back.
