Question I would like to improve my filter system

    Question:

Does anyone recomend a good pond filter, that I can add to my current 5000 gallon pond? Currently, I only have a skimmer and 2 biofalls, and a bottom drain. but I can't get the water to stay clear.

Please remember my pond is a month old, if that helps.

I may have to do a "beauty" contest soon. Please let me know if and how many I should have in my pond, if I am overstocked.

I have 25 Koi that are 4 inches, 5 koi that are from 13-18 inches, (3 are the 18".)

Your pond has not had enough time to properly cycle. Once the bio filters kick in it may clear............

25 4" koi is going to be 25 8" Koi then 12"....ect, ect, ect....................

You should consider weeding out the ones you really don't want. Overstocked, yep............... I would consider getting rid of half of them....at least.

A good rule of thumb on stocking levels is a minimum of 250 gallons per koi with more be always better. Remember this are not destined to be 6" goldfish. These are carp that can easily become over 28". So stock now as if they were fully grown adults. That will also give your pond and filtration time to accept the growing load...over time.

at least 6 weeks to mature your filters, untill then it is a roller coaster for the water. get a test kit for the water if you have not already (drops not strips)
and do some reading in the construction forum, Birdman has the build for a great sand/gravel filter, self cleaning....you may want to eventually at least add something like that

if your pond and its filter had matured you would NOT be overstocked at all...
25 4 inch koi have about the mass of a 20 inch koi and have a metabolic load on the filter of perhaps a 25 inch koi. So with those 25 fish equalling one koi and the five under 18 inches you do not even have the Biomass load of 4 mature koi.
If IF your filter was mature you would NOT be overstocked at all.
Your problem is thta you did not slowly add fish to the pond so the filter's maturation (and ability to process the products produced by fish waste) is being overwhelmed at the moment...and without monitoring and knowing your water parameters...we cannot be sure your pond is overstocked at all.

In the future your pond Will DEFINITELY be overstocked unless you remove some of the fish as the young fish grow.
