How often do you empty that little phoam bucket?

I may have to build one of those.

    I haven't, yet.

It builds up and breaks down and never overflows becuase of the weight of the phoam. It may overflow today though if I am not careful. I am going to pour the contents in a clear glass jar to show everyone what exactly I am pulling out of the water column.

I am currrently building one for someone who asked me for one.

btw, the phoam bucket is an 8 gallon wash basin type bucket you can get at home depot in the cleaning aisle.

    A question... or two.

    Nice job Ethan,

    A couple of questions though.

1.) You used Bio-balls instead of an air source? I like the K.I.S.S of yours, but just how much H2O can the FF design handle before over efficiency threshold?

2.)And yours makes a 90 degree turn to the other FF I've seen... It seems to me that the design has its limitations on just how much water can be processed in a given time.

Say if someone wanted to process 6K gallons/ hr. ( I can dream big can't I?)

I would make a double unit in that case, each 5.5-6 feet tall, out of 8" PVC everywhere, 8" elbows, an 8" T (if they make it with a 4" top port)with a 3" export hole, with 3" ball valves on the end to adjust flow.

what do you mean about efficiency threshold?

There are limitations on flow just like any filter. This one's limitation is gravity flow through a certain inch opening. Mine has a 2" opening. THere is some back pressure helping to increase teh flow out that 2" pipe, but not much. I am getting 1200-1300 gph flow out my setup.

that's with a 3,000 gph pump in the skimmer, feeding 6 feet of height.

That;s why I suggest 3" openings at the end of the setup (for yours), with 3" ball valves to control flow back to the pond. That ball valve's purpose is to raise water high enough in the system to where phoam comes out and where the phoam isn't sucked out the last exit.
