You should always have 0 Nitrites, Nitrates and Ammonia except when the filters are cycling during pond start up. There will be traces in the pond but not enough to register on the test kits we use.

pH should be around 7-8 but stable is the key word. You should test at dawn and dusk for a few days in a row to see if your pH is swinging up and down.

Alkalinity and hardness should be a minimum of 80-100. The alkalinity helps stabilize the pH and keep it from crashing. Your pH is already low and you have 0 alkalinity so you should be very careful, especially during heavy rains which tends to lower pH even more. You can add crushed oyster shells or chicken scratch to your filter to help out.

Be sure to use a good drop test kit and not the strips. Keep the kit inside in the cool air and they recommend you get a new kit every year to make sure you're getting precise readings.
The views expressed above are my own personal views and, as such, do not necessarily reflect the views of the AKCA or the KHA program.
