I know I can't afford them but just out of curiosity, what would the starting bid be?

I do not know what is requested as an opening bid. I doubt any of the nisai will go for less than 500,000 yen, and then add commission, shipping, etc. But, one never knows who will show up to bid.

The starting bids may vary per koi base, it is normally up to the auctioneer to decide the starting bid at the auction time. The average for tosai is around 100,000.00 yen... Those in yellow frame can start from 3K.

Sandy, I take it that your against surgery on Koi to improve thier pattern.
Some of the best Chatline threads to read have been on this topic. Mostly a comparison is made with humans who opt for cosmetic surgeries. I have to agree with you, tho. It's Not my "cup of tea"....But like all businesses, you want to get every last value out of your product towards the bottom line.
Brian had an interesting article out recently on his visit to china and where the future is for the japanese breeders is headed. I thought the % of where thier koi go was very interesting and maybe that has something to do with the emphasis on making the "perfect Koi".
