No action this year! :-( I was busy and did not get to spawn. Instead, I concentrated on raising the babies that I spawned in 2011 and 2012. I will post an update of their progress soon. They are nowhere near to the quality of your fish but I am fairly happy with way they have developed.

You mentioned that FD food is working well for you. Are you feeding it to the fry and fingerling also? Besides water quality, I think the biggest challenge for all backyard breeders is having the right food for the fry. All your fish have very nicely shaped body for their age, that tells me that you have a good feeding regimen. Can you share that secret with us, Chin? :-)

    Regards,
    Sunny

Nice looking showas, Junichi-san! You and Chin are making us backyard breeders looking like amateurs! :-) Good question Mike! If I may speculate, the two fish that were eliminated showed signs of weak beni, especially, the fish that's facing about 11:00 o'clock. It's a good candidate to become shiro utsuri. Look forward to the answers to Mike's question.

It's not final choices but was 3rd cull/senbetsu technically as they are about 4-5 inches only, and culling/senbetsu/ranking will continue..

The Bozu has an unrefined old tyle sumi in terms of quality & pattern (as you can see attached pic) and the Maruten became a deformed shape for some unaccountable reason.

The weak beni is a reason as well, and as you know, it's just because these are not suitable for grow-out fast.

It all depends on how to raise but I think this Hiban is borderline...

Sorry, Junichi-San! I mistyped...I meant the fish facing 1:00 o'clock and not 11:00 o'clock that has the worse beni . Thanks for posting them and sharing your knowledge.

    Sunny
