    the world's smallest koi?

Ok, so I've seen a LOT of big koi in my time. well over a meter more than a few times. And females of size that looked like they would burst with egg mass.

But here's a question-- what is the smallest adult koi you have ever seen? I've seen adult bonsai koi that were only 8-9 inches! JR

WHat age are you considering to be adult?

My son takes Koi home from the farm from time to time and stashes them in jugs, 2 gallon 'SpongeBob' aquariums, 10 gallon aquariums, jars with tadpoles, etc. He has some 2 year old Koi that are 2 inches.

    Best Wishes,

2 inches?! Ladies and gentleman I think we have a winner! LOls

I'd call a fish an adult at breeding age-- so two is probably the age, especially for males. Do you think they can breed? JR

Hummmmmnnn, that's an interesting question. I'll have to get a close look at them from underneath and see if any are females, and if they are eggy at all. I'm pretty sure the males could 'contribute'.

    Best Wishes,
    Brady

    timely subject

    why?
i have been thinking about how to keep a small koi small.
now i will never be the GC ponder but was thinking how i could get a great baby koi and keep it baby for a long time.
will make alot easier to catch on show weekend.

maybe even keeping a koi in the size 1,2 and 3 class.

    Yep Brady wins.

I had eight 40 gallon tanks with 10 koi in each tank.
They topped out at 6 inches after a year.

I have a 3 year old Shusui in a 125gal tank who is 5 1/2 inches. He was a little over an inch when we got him. He was given to my son by a dealer and started life in a 10 gallon tank.

Of course not a "koi" in the strictest sense of the word, but my buddy Vance that breeds longfins has adult males (freely run milt when squeezed) at the age of one and a size of less than 6 inches. I've seen eggy (gravid) females of his at age 2 about the same size.

Over the years I've seen koi that "never grew" very small fish from a large batch that even at the age of three and four are still less than 6 inches.

Like anything else, when you've hundreds of thousands of them, a few will be "tobi" very fast growing, and the same few will be at the other end of the standard normal distribution, very small and slow growing.

Never really studied many of the really small ones out of a large batch, usually ran them through a bar grader and fed them to the bass.

Ok, now that Brady wins, I wonder who has the small koi ever to breed. The smallest I have ever bred with was 8 inches - a male. The smallest female was 9 inches.

What's funny about those, wass the babies where larger than the parent at the end of the first season.
