    Spawning - Can this happen?

As far as I know, I have 7 large females in my mud pond. With the exception of the 2 Shiros from this growout, they are all 5-22 years old. I was 99.9% sure they were female. I'm 90% certain the Shiros are female.

This morning, my I saw my 2 longfins spawning. One of them is 22 years old. I pulled a lot of the eggs out and put them in an aerated, heated stock tank to see what happens.

If a female is full of eggs, will another female "spawn" push the eggs out without having a male in the pond? These fish have been together for at least 7 years without spawning.
The views expressed above are my own personal views and, as such, do not necessarily reflect the views of the AKCA or the KHA program.

It is possible for a female to bump and push eggs out of another female. However if the eggs develop/hatch that requires a male

Thanks, Ray. I thought I'd seen females do that in mass spawns but someone said there would have to be a male in the pond for that to happen.

I took the eggs out so I can make sure I know if they hatch or not.

It was great seeing you and Martha again. Martha looks great!

Hi Sandy, like Cindi Lauper's tune 'She Bop',... a female Koi can spawn all by herself,... but it's rumored she will go blind if she does. As Ray mentioned obviously the eggs are just released, unfertilized.

    Best Wishes,

LOL, Brady, I'll have to check her vision in a couple of days.

I'm starting to feel better about this. I should know if the eggs are viable by tomorrow night. I put a heater in the tank to keep the temp up so the eggs will develop faster if they're viable.

Sandy , You probably remember Mike Pfeffer.

He has a female Y. Ogon (A Brady fish) that has bred 2 or 3 times at shows without a male in the tank. At close to 30" you can guess the amount of cleanup that it takes to get the tank clean. She is now Banned from any show in the Mid-West !
