    2011 Eastern's Young Koi Show . . .

Last Saturday, Eastern Koi & Waterscapes in Westminster, CA held their Young Koi Show.

It was a small show (59 entries) limited to 20" and under and utilized the crystal inflatable show bags from Japan (reusable souvenirs).

Shinkokai Judges Henry Nakamura (Asahi Koi) and Tom Lai (Champion Koi) were on hand to pick the winners.

Contestants were treated to goody bags and a complimentary lunch (Taco Stand with all the condiments -- as well as rice, beans, chips & drinks).

Winners received trophies, Eastern Koi Gift Certificates and boxes of Tomigai Koi Food.

A beautiful sunny day and lots of spectators added to the festival atmosphere.

Everyone had a great time and we can't wait for next year's bigger and better show.

Thanks for all the pictures, Don. Interesting way to judge, I have never seen pictures of this type of judging in the USA.

So, did you enter your fish or were you the official photographer?

If you entered, how did you do?

as i sit here in upper 30's it is nice to see everyone in short on a bright sunny day

    BUT

koi in a plastic bag in the middle of sun with no shade now that is SCARY.

I am afraid of greenhouse effect when i float a bag outside to get temperature to even out and that is floating in water for 15 minutes and i even keep a towel or something over it to stop sunlight heating up the water in the bag

I was thinking the same thing.

But, if you know any of the people shown in the pictures, you can be sure that they were thinking the same thing and keeping a close monitor on the situation.

    Hello Richard . . .

First time we've seen them used in person; very impressive product.

    Hello Barbara . . .

Yes, we had fish in this small show; one was selected GC and a couple of other koi did well, too.

    Hello Paul . . .

If you look at the pics from the Awards Ceremony, you can see the shade cloth covering this entire area. Plus, there were some extra tarps hung to block the sun's rays from angling in. Even so, some things didn't go as planned and got stretched out.

Next time, things should go more smoothly and take less time -- meaning the koi will be back home and in their ponds even faster -- which will be a good thing.

Thanks, Richard. Too bad you couldn't make it down to help bench and check out the operation in person. Next year, maybe?

    Best wishes,
