Occasionally a Doitsu will take top prize in shows in Japan, I would expect we'll see one at the Nogyosai next week, but generally wagoi win over doitsu every time and when Doitsu win it's a very special example.

If two koi are otherwise equal, the wagoi will rank above the doitsu because it is more difficult to have a wagoi develop the look of a painted pattern.

However, it is rare to have a doitsu be equal to a quality wagoi. The scales add a dimension of depth that a doitsu cannot achieve simply because it does not have scales.

There is also a bias against doitsu. That bias has many aspects, including cultural ones. In a very real sense, doitsu are lacking a physical attribute that is an inherent trait of carp. Think of a koi without a dorsal fin. It would never be allowed in a show because it would be defective. All doitsu are defective, but the defect has been accepted in recognizing doitsu as a show class. It is analogous to longfins, which are not allowed to compete against koi. It is an incongruous fact of history that doitsu have been allowed to compete, but they are inherently exceptions to the ideal of beauty that nishikigoi are supposed to represent.

There are many such biases in the appreciation of ornamental carp. It has been almost universally observed that people not trained in koi appreciation will say the Yamabuki in a collection of koi is the most beautiful of all. Those trained in koi appreciation will always prefer gosanke.

For show, raise gosanke. For enjoyment, raise what pleases you.
