was more curious to know what you were looking to produce from this cross.

Would think it would be a breeder. I like the sumi it brings. maybe back to showa?

Dick, maybe I will come back to you with this after we have had time to discuss why Kawari over Showa

I'd say it is not Showa because the sumi does not wrap from below, although there are some hints there may be some sumi below the lateral line toward the rear, and the body type does not say 'Showa'.

Those wanting to stick an existing varietal label on it will debate whether it is a poor Sanke with heavy sumi, or a poor Showa with unique sumi patterning. Normally the Showa vs Sanke debate occurs over a high class koi so influenced by Sanke genes in a Showa frame that we have created the 'Showanke' hybrid label. Because these high quality koi are beautiful, they often get through the benching to be put in one class or another, but they are really neither.

Here we have a lower quality koi with a mix of traits. There is nothing wrong about acknowledging that reality. It is neither. So, we have a tricolor oddball. The 'All Others' class fits.

Question: Was this a black fry?

right, not showa. That sumi is different and look at the way it sets up on the scales-- those are sumi patterns on the scale liek we see on matsukawabaki. It is not undeveloped sumi , nor is it kage. It is closer to kanako but not that either. Closest to asagi scalation appointment and deeper sumi -- so karasu linked and possibly sanke crossed or at least in the lineage. JR

JR. Very well spotted. You should be a koi judge LOLs. Just kidding mate. The parent koi is sanke and matsukabake. The sanke is from a sanke line and the matsukabake is from my third generation of matsukawabakes that I have been crossing back to kohaku each generation.
